Today was a packed day for us. We first began the day by packing up all our things and rolling our luggage into the classroom for storage. After that, we promptly began the first presentation of the day with Kamoko Kamata who is a graduate from Harvard University. She spoke about social movements and the sex crime laws in Japan which hadn’t been changed since 1907. She talked about a campaign she was involved with called “Believe.” They are a large group who advocates for civic change in Japan. They’re all about gender equality and not only trying to bring change to the law in Japan but the culture of gender violence.
After the presentation, we all went our separate ways to have lunch. Shandy, Cassie, Kara, and I ended up eating Chinese food and then Kara, Shandy, and I went to a Starbucks Reserve shortly after.
Those who hadn’t watched Terrace House reconvened and watched the first episode of the series. Terrace House is a Japanese reality tv show that first launched on Fuji TV in 2012 and moved to Netflix in 2015 when Netflix launched in Japan. It is a show that follows 6 people who live in the same house while trying to get to know each other. More specifically, it follows three girls and three boys from different backgrounds and experiences in Japan.
Following the first showing of Terrace house to the class, we had a presentation from professor Lindsay Nelson. Her presentation was about Terrace House with the focus of Japanese masculinity on the show and in Japan. She focused on the hegemonic idea of masculinity where many aspire to be this idealistic man which is established in many ways.
After professor Lindsay Nelsons presentation, we all were given new rooms and moved our luggage into our new rooms. This time we were given rooms on the 7th floor with a better view, which was exciting. As soon as we all had a chance to settle into our rooms, we decided to go to the JR office to switch our tickets for the way home after our class excursion. The office was hubbed across from Shinjuku station which was large in itself. We got lost in trying to find it and then when we were told it closed in 10 min we ran for our lives.

After we all figured things out we ended up splitting up and half of us got curry while the other half of us got okonomiyaki. The night didn’t end there as we ended up going to get French toast at CafĂ© Aaliya to end the night. Overall, it was a long and rewarding day that ended in delicious food.
